<text>After our house flooded during Harvey, we evacuated to a hotel near the Galleria. We'd been stuck there for a couple of days and needless to say, were very grateful to get somewhere safe, comfortable and dry. The aftermath of the storm was still being felt everywhere, including most restaurants - but there was one place within walking distance of the hotel which was open: the Burger Palace, on Sage Road. They were there working as hard as they could, serving burgers and trying to keep some sense of normality for folks who just wanted a hot meal. Normally they have a variety of gourmet burgers with all kinds of extras, but all they had on this day were regular old burgers. Gourmet or not, I can safely say it was one of the best burgers I've ever had in my life - when you are tired, hungry and distressed it means the world to have a decent meal and a cold beer. My hat's off to the restaurant owners, workers, and cooks who kept things going during a tough time and helped to lift our spirits.</text>

<text>Four months before the storm, we sold a suburban house of 21 years and moved to the 40th floor of a highrise in the heart of downtown, 2 blocks from the bayou. Saturday was uneventful, and we were beginning to feel that Harvey was yet another overhyped weather event. We walked down to the Buffalo Bayou a couple times and saw that the somewhat elevated level was actually lower than it had been on Friday.

Sunday morning I looked out the window and saw water. I went immediately to our basement storage unit and saw that a pump failed and it was beginning to take on water. I came and got my husband and we began moving many, many boxes out of the unit. The freight elevator ceased functioning in the rising water so this meant carrying heavy items up many stairs. We got all but a large table that we elevated on 4 clothing stuffed plastic bins (later these items floated and resettled themselves in the water).

Then the waiting began. We lost water intermittently on Sunday, but that pump situation was ultimately resolved. The elevators were removed from service for roughly 3 days because the basement flooding soaked the cables, ensuring sufficient exercise. We lost television service and internet for 5 or 6 days. But we never lost the most important: electricity and the beautiful air conditioning.

By Tuesday I was slightly crazy so I walked to the convention center which was, at that point, housing its peak of 10,000 people. The generosity of Houstonians was immediately apparent with mountains of donations lining the back of the giant center with heavy pedestrian traffic bringing more. I then waited in line with countless other volunteers, finally signing in then skirting the required “orientation.” I began helping by distributing wheel chairs to the medical hubs in the different halls, giving me a chance to really see what was occurring. I was struck by feeling of calmness, allaying my fears of finding the basest human survival instincts described at the New Orleans Superdome. Evacuees were polite and resigned, sleeping and sitting in family groups. Many gathered flattened cardboard to create walls to give them their own space. The most heartbreaking situation I saw was a pregnant mother being transported to a hospital, having to leave her 5, 4, and 2 year old in the hands of strangers as she knew no one else at the shelter.

I finally made my way to the food intake area where I help sort and organize the flood of incoming food. Ready to eat foods were sent up the the dinner line to accompany the pallets of ready to eat meals, heated in some portable ovens. Again, evacuees were patient and polite. Watching a Red Cross Shelter in action was truly awe-inspiring, having worked in many volunteer situations. The operation is like a massive animal, operating without a head. I tried unsuccessfully to find out the ultimate destination of the canned foods, trying to organize most effectively for the future. I never found anyone “in charge.” Leadership was naturally taken up by the volunteer that had been there the longest and had the right personality. And it worked. Ten thousand people were fed, cots and blankets were distributed, varying degrees of medical care were provided, medication was distributed. When I left near 10:00pm, a huge new crop of volunteers were undergoing orientation.

Wednesday I felt I could safely get to the food pantry where I have volunteered for years out in Katy. With unfortunate timing, I had agreed to become the Director beginning 2 days before, after foisting my youngest child off on the university system. The pantry got about a foot of water in it. Especially heartbreaking because we had just finished a slight expansion and complete redo about 3 weeks before. If you have never had the privilege of cleaning up flood water, it is impressively dirty, leaving sandy debris and general “ick” everywhere. While we were moving every shelf inside, cutting out sheetrock, and discarding food that had been on the bottom shelves, volumes of donations were arriving and being staged outside until we could move them in.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday are a bit of a blur. I was at the pantry about 12 hours each day. In the parking lot in front we set up a drive through service for those in need. Sometimes, we had 10 or more cars being served at a time. Over those three days, we helped over 1000 households, representing 1000s of adults and children. While this circus was occurring in the front, the back door was equally busy. Cars, trucks and trailers lined up to drop off donations. To satisfy our ruling body, all items donated need to weighed on the way in. A single 18” square scale is what we have to process donations that may be 2000 lbs. for a trailer. Food is weighed and tabulated again on its way out. Our early numbers show we have distributed more than 120,000 lbs. of foods, diapers, and personal care items.

The next few days and weeks will be interested. Houston is nowhere near being able to assess the storm damage. Many people are still not able to get to their homes to see if flooding has occurred. Interstate 10, in a section between myself and the food pantry, is being kept dry by a portable berm over which water has been pumped. Many major streets and intersections are still underwater despite going several days now without rain. The statistic I saw recently was that Houston received 51" of raining a few days. Our average annual rainfall is 47”.</text>

<text>18 months post Harvey still brings acute pains of sorrow. The storm began before the storm with days spent preparing our home for possible flooding. 2 feet of Brays Bayou terrorized our precious home for 24 hours leaving us weeks of back breaking clean up while trying to carry on day to day living, eating, sleeping, working, and caring for each other. Harvey was the worst of our three floods. How could Harvey bring flooding to Brays Bayou after all the widening and improved drainage to protect our neighborhoods? Our home sits gutted now waiting for a buyer to tear her down and build an oversized home in her spot she reigned for 68 years. We lost our home and three cars in Harvey, but we have the means to recover. We count our blessings and lost no life. The grieving process is a lengthy one and here we are as life goes on. </text>

<text>When our local church shelter in Alvin had to close due to imminent flooding plus non-working bathrooms, roughly 500 of us were packed onto buses for some unknown shelter destination outside of Brazoria County. We were initially told they were possible taking us to Waco. We were told we could take 1 bag per person. I am single grandma with custody of medically, mentally challenged child with autism. We had his two autism/PTSD therapy dogs, all his medical supplies (he was on 8 different scripts), two days worth of clothing and all my legal papers proving I have custody. Because of the need to keep the dogs, medical supplies and legal papers, we had to leave all clothing behind.

1. packed into buses cattle style, no working bathroom. What turned out to be a 12 hour ride through the storm, one 10 minute rest room break for 500 people at a gas station. No money, no food, no drinks. Couldn't even get dogs out of crates to potty.
2. was told only his small dog could go to shelter, they would find somewhere to board his bigger dog - we had to sign papers releasing her to unknown destination - her crate was tagged with all our info and notice she was child's ptsd/autism therapy dog. We were told someone would take him to see her daily as long as we were in shelter. That never happened.
3. first shelter we were taken to was closed so we reboarded and sent to an old school near ft hood
4. more hours being processed, still no food, drinks or bathroom (with a child who has already soiled his only set of clothing) and who was bordering on hysteria
5. settle in, hundreds of ft hood service people and community volunteers dug in to help us all. finally food. for 3 days it was great. Red Cross pretty much ignored my requests for assistance. No one had any clothes he could fit into nor the much needed medical "diapers", he had to stay in filthy soaked cloth. Bed sheets were soaked the first night; we were told we could only have that one set of sheets and blankets. Volunteers helped staff a playroom , brought me some small toys to occupy hjm, stuffed animal to comfort him.
6. Waited hours, missing meal time to stand in lines for drs to get help with replacing his meds and still trying to get him some medical adult size diapers and clothing.
7. Red Cross forced all volunteers out of shelter and dropped down to small staff. No one able to help those of us with special need children! He cant bath himself or be in mens room alone. They wouldn't let me take him into ladys room shower nor could ?I go into mens room with him so he ended up with body sores, rashes etc because I had no way to clean him up.
8. there was no assistance with special dietary needs. All the days we were there, they had milke twice and only a gallon or two - not enough for all the children that were there.
9 Constant requests to red cross for someone to find his other therapy dog and take us to see her fell on deaf ears. He desperately needed her and at this point, they still couldn't even find her. Mad because we weren't allowed to keep her yet some dang Red Cross idiot let a family bring in a therapy pig!!!!
10. Days later, Red Cross finally decided to put on a dog and pony show, gave us a roll of quarters and took us to a laundromat. But still no changes of clothes. Were we supposed to sit naked while we washed our clothing? Someone finally loaned me a blanket to wrap him in so I could wash his clothing he had on. A local radio station promised they would get us clothing and some toys to help him since he couldn't have the dog he desperately needed. They brought the items to us but Red Cross refused to allow them entry. They finally found his missing therapy dog, 2 hours after we were put on a bus to go back to Alvin.

I wasn't the only one there with a special needs child or family member. There were other children with autism, downs syndrome, ADHD and more. There were several wheelchair bound people. No one was helping any of us with our special needs. A select few would ask what they could do but when given specific requests, nothing was ever done. We had great care, help and concern shown by volunteers, esp the military but when Red Cross kicked out all volunteers, we were left floundering. I would rather take my chances and have us stuck in a flooded home with no electricity and him at least have his other needs met then to ever risk going to a shelter again.

He jokingly said one day that it was Harvey Hell Home and honestly, it was. Then I almost lost my job when I returned, my employer denied me the right for the financial assistance from unemployment which even the unemployment hearing judge said I was qualified for. My home was further destroyed by a "Cajun" group who took 2 weeks to tear apart part of my house before realizing they lacked the skills and left everything torn apart and replacement construction materials ruined. We still have unrepaired damage, inside and outside, water and mold, health issues...
