The first full evening of the storm, the Rice University Provost called me and asked that the Doerr Institute for New Leaders team with the Center for Civic Leadership to create Rice's volunteer response to the need in Houston. In order to accomplish that, I created a Leader's Intent Statement to read back to the Provost to ensure that we were on track with what she wanted. The intent statement gave the effort a successful launch, and the success of the Rice volunteer initiative is well documented with multiple videos. Because it was useful in guiding the work of all involved, I thought it might be nice to share the original document, which I have uploaded. It is a great example of fast communication used in a crisis to organize effort while providing for initiative. Neither he nor I knew how long we would stay, but he and his family were more than generous. Then when the water receded, he helped with generators and other materials. We ended up staying with him for 5 weeks. Other people could not wait to come to Houston to help us. A lot of this is a blur but I do not know how we would have mucked out the house without all the help we received. It took several weeks and I counted 30 people that came to our house to work cleaning it out. I will never forget them. Earlier that day a friend and myself were celebrating as Harvey had finally dissipated and my home was still dry; he decided to wade to the closest open store to come back with supplies and some beer to celebrate. Shortly after he left, the sewer started backing up into the bathtub and flood waters starting rising visibly and quickly into the back yard. With the sound of helicopters overhead, the doorbell rang, and it was a friendly man with a boat, explaining he was here to evacuate me. I was surprised, being that the storm had gone, and my home was dry... but he explained the waters may rise an additional 6-7 feet due to the dam release, and I should leave immediately. I left a note on the door for my friend whom was not answering his cell phone and left in the boat, only to meet up with my friend shortly after at the next evacuation point... he had been picked up by the Cajun Army whilst coming back from the store. The beer came in handy at the shelter that night, as we sat around swapping stories! Description An account of the resource This image was taken after about half of the remediation of my home had been finished, and the house had started to disappear behind the wreckage... Every day I saw people searching through the piles of refuse looking for anything salvageable. It did not bother me at all, as if someone can refinish a table or chair and give it a new life, it is better than filling up a landfill. Given everything going on I did not have the time for it myself, and sometimes I would even help dig through the piles to help them find matching items! But other neighbors were getting very upset with people going through their personal items, even if curbside.
