<text>Vernon teacher trapped by Hurricane Harvey
Vernon Christian School teacher Melissa Overend was in Texas when the storm struck
CARMEN WELDAug. 30, 2017 3:20 p.m.LOCAL NEWSNEWS

A Vernon teacher was visiting family in Houston, Texas when she was caught in the middle of Hurricane Harvey.

Melissa Overend (or Mrs. Overend to her students at Vernon Christian School,) was deep in the heart of Texas when the storm struck.

She is a Texan who now loves living in Vernon. She had flown down to her hometown of Houston for her sister’s wedding.

“Unexpectedly, and at times incredibly frightening, I have found myself experiencing this devastation with millions of others,” wrote Overend, who added she was meant to be home on Sunday but her flights keep getting cancelled.

“Despite being overwhelmed by the destruction of many, many Houstonian homes, and the impact this trauma will have on Houstonian lives in the months to come, I see God’s arms lovingly holding these people close and placing his workers throughout the city to help them.

“Seeing lives being saved, people helping people, rescues by Good Samaritans, the coast guard, fire and rescue, police and other city workers alike in action. I’m glad to be here: to be alive and well and with my Texan family.”

Overend explains that there are millions of people in Houston alone.

“It’s not hard to do some math and realize from TV images alone how a million homes could easily have been affected by this storm. Easy. I deeply ache for those who lost their lives or homes,” she continued.

“Like the constant, heart-pounding dreadful sound of rain that has etched a path in many of our minds here these past four days, one cannot escape seeing the destruction.”

She said that the media is not sensationalizing this story and that what you see is an accurate portrayal.

“The persistent rain and flooding, people being trapped and rescued, countless tornado warnings are TRUE and REAL. Annual rainfall averages fell only in a matter of a few days.”

She said she has been inspired by the acts of kindness and help that she has witnessed in so many ways,. Her own sister used her phone and Facebook to arrange rescue boats and work with the community to help in anyway she could.

“Countless people are in this spontaneous, civilian relief effort to help and support others escape rising waters and reach dry shelters,” added Overend.

“From boat rescues, delivering water, supplies and toiletries, to offering car rides to total strangers, these people are giving of themselves to serve others.”

Overend said she is “thankful to the Lord” that her family is all safe and that every day it feels like her eyes are playing tricks on her as she looks out to see her hometown under water.

<text>Today, marks a year since Hurricane Harvey left our small community of Huffman. There's not one month that's gone by since last August that I haven't been reminded of Harvey's destruction. FEMA trailers and porta potties now have grass growing around them in neighboring front yards. Our shed seems to have pulled through, after flooding, without replacing any boards. The electric tools, that were on the floor of the shed, weren't so lucky. Our once reliable riding mower has since been testing my husbands patience and handyman skills. My neighbor did retrench the ditch between our properties. Some neighbors had their ditches dug deeper by the county. The golf course has repainted the outside of their community center but still their fence lays scattered on the edge of the golf course. Homes in our neighborhood boasts on their for sale signs "No Flooding". Long gone are the days where they said "Pool and Spa". Employees have stopped telling me that they've lost their car, their home, their livestock, their cousin, their everything due to that storm. I no longer receive calls from the school that my daughter had yet another accident because 5 weeks after Harvey she is still traumatized from that storm. I don't call the insurance company anymore, I moved on. And together we're moving forward in our community. Together, we've hugged we've cried and now today we'll remember how we once became Huffman Strong.

<text>My family and I enjoy the outdoors; we hike, kayak and rock climb as much as possible. We received our first kayak as a gift from my father-in-law, and by the time Harvey hit we each had our own. Since my father-in-law lives in Towne Lake, we kept our kayaks there. On the night of August 28th, it was announced that the Army Corps of Engineers would be releasing water from the reservoir, we knew we were going to get some water in the house. We didn’t think it would do much damage, after all during the Tax Day flood our streets flooded but didn’t even get near our sidewalks. How bad could it be? We decided not to leave. My husband and I took turns worrying in front of the television screen, I’d wake up from dozing off and he kept me updated on the reports. By 5:18 a.m. on the 29th of August the water was up to our door, and water was still going to be released yet again, and it just would NOT stop raining. Still in denial, even after seeing the water up to our door, I laid back on the couch and let my husband know that I was going back to sleep because it would stop soon, how much more rain could fall? Well, he let me know that things were already floating around in the garage, and that’s when it finally processed in my brain. We had to leave. At 8:00 a.m. I called my dad to meet us at the end of our neighborhood, closer to his house, to pick us up. We each had a bag packed, we went out through the back door and began walking through the murky water, with that continuous rain and the sound of helicopters above us. Surely I was dreaming, I had watched people get rescued from high water for the last 4 days on television, I was sleep deprived and thinking, hoping, this can’t be happening TO ME. We walked towards the major street, by this time other neighbors were doing the same, some still deciding what to do standing outside of their house.

The summer before Harvey, in 2016, my family and I drove to Utah and went on a National Park tour. One of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited, Zion National Park, is known for the hiking trail The Narrows. This trail is none like I’ve ever seen, a hike that takes to the bottom of Zion Canyon-the name given describes the hike alongside the riverbed and the narrow walls of the canyon. I shouldn’t compare this to walking through flooded street waters, but we had our hiking gear on and as I was recording with my cell phone and falling behind my family-I felt some of the same feelings. The same heaviness in my legs that comes when walking against the current, the disbelief of what I’m experiencing (obviously Zion was a wonderful disbelief), and even the same realization that I’m not the only one experiencing this!

By the 31st of August we were able to get our kayaks from my father in law. Anxiously wanting to find out exactly how much damage was done to our home, of course praying for the best but preparing our minds for the worse, my husband and I kayaked down the streets from my parents house towards ours. We kayaked the streets we walk on weekend mornings. We kayaked through the greenbelt that we used as a shortcut when we walk to my parent’s house-it looked like we lived in a swampland. I cried as I saw our houses marked with bright orange C’s and H’s-the marks on the doors, windows and even trees were indicators for rescuers to know whether people were home or cleared. We literally kayaked INTO our house and saw the damage for ourselves for the first time. We only had 14 inches of water in our house, I say only because I had friends and family that had 4-5 feet of water in their house. It took us only 6 months to get back into our home, again, I say only because some people still aren’t back. During the time it took to rebuild, we stayed with my parents, they live in the same neighborhood but were fortunate to not have flooded. I can’t thank my friends, family, and volunteer organizations enough for their help, I can never repay what was given to us-but from the bottom of our hearts we are forever grateful. Needless to say, we haven’t kayaked since then. We’ve gone on camping trips and hiked but I still don’t have a desire to get into a kayak. When I am able to unsee that murky water that took over my home and vehicles, I’ll try kayaking again.

<text>August 24th, 2017 my husband, myself, and our then 9monthbold son, left Oregon with everything we could fit in my 2014 Kia Forte. We were on the road to our new home here in Houston.

Some ask why we decided to move THAT weekend, well, reason being, is wildfires were rapidly spreading in Northern California/southern Oregon at that time, and we had a very small window of getting out safely. So we left. At the same time, we were driving towards the hurricane, hoping to get to my fathers house before it was too late. I, myself drove the whole way due to my husband not having a license. 2 1/2 days of driving, we made it to Waco,Tx. We had planned to stay the night in Waco, (mind you, we only had $1,000 to our name for this move) I had budgeted just enough for one more stay if needed (and I was TIRED). I called my father, and he urged me to get to Houston as soon as possible. So we decided to continue driving. Well as we got closer, we were notified of road closers, all the roads we needed to take to get to my fathers house off of Barker Cypress and Clay road. Closed.

It was 9:30pm and we were driving south on 45, and came to the 1960 exit, when we saw nothing but flashing lights, and water. I had to turn around (on the south side) and go north on a south bound lane. I ended up getting onto Luetta, and we drove to the Circle K at Luetta and TC Jester. We were stuck. I tried to go to 259(?) and hit water so high it came up over the hood of my car, but miraculously, I was able to flip in reverse and get up in a parking lot without my car stalling.

Somehow, by the grace of god, I was able to get to the comfort suites off 45, and waited for my dad.

My father is a 71 year old Uber driver, and while I was trying to find a way to him, he was trying to find his way to us. I have NEVER been more scared in my life. Somehow he made it to us. We had to drive North on southbound lanes, with water pushing concrete barriers against us. We probably broke 1,001 traffic laws that night, but he found us and guided us to his house safely.

That next morning, on the news, the gas station we were at, WAS 14 feet UNDER WATER!!!!!

I don’t know how we made it, but we did. And thankfully my fathers neighborhood didn’t flood!

It was definitely a move we will never forget!</text>
