The ground floor of Brompton Court. It smelled like rot. The soles of my shoes stuck to each stair step. For a long time after Harvey, Brompton amassed tall piles of trash—furniture and appliances. These washers looked like forgotten refugees.

The water was rising and we started putting our furniture upstairs. Thankfully it never got in the house.
